Mindset Learn exam revision kicked off in Thembisa

From the beginning of November, Mindset Learn has partnered with five centers or schools in three provinces to provide weekend revision classes. The project aims to assist Grade 12 learners with tips to approach examinations in critical subjects of Mathematics and Physical Sciences. Apart from Thembisa High, learners can attend these classes at IR Leasolang in Mabopane, Phoenix Secondary School and Grove End Secondary School in Durban, Bokamoso Science and Technology Centre in Burgereght Village near Polokwane, and Langazelela Secondary School in Nquthu.

In Thembisa, the normally quiet and calm weekend corridors of the school were bustling with eager and enthusiastic Grade 12 learners rushing to get to their Mindset Learn revision lessons beginning at 09:00. These young, prospering minds had looks of determination and fortitude as they had given up their Saturday and Sunday mornings to attend these revision lessons. All the learners were keen and excited about this “new way” of learning. The large classroom had a broadcast of DStv’s Mindset Learn Channel 319.

The learners all hurried into the classroom and settled down with their learning packs, consisting of a Mathematics 911 file and an exercise paper containing all the questions that the presenter on TV would soon answer. As soon as the broadcast began, the learners all began to concentrate and practice their own examples by following the presenter. All heads were faced forward or down learning and practicing the questions, some consulting each other for advice, while others were asking their teachers for help. There was a magnificent synergy of multimedia presentation coupled with teacher/learner interaction, all within a supervised learning context. For hours they concentrated and focused on each of the examples presented. Some gave out exclamations of joy at having got the questions correct, while others looked relieved as they realised how questions were answered.

The learners stated that the sessions were an invaluable experience, one that would certainly help them achieve good results in the end of year Matric examinations. All the learners expressed their gratitude at having been given the opportunity to attend such a dynamic session of learning, reflection and understanding. The learners and educators alike wished to thank Standard Bank for making such a precious experience available to some of South Africa’s brightest young minds, and future leaders. The revision programme was broadcast over two weeks at the start of the exams this year.
