This teacher guide provides an overview of the Mindset series of lessons on Chemical Reactions 1 and will help teachers integrate these resources into their learning
programme.

In this series of nine lessons learners will learn how to represent chemical changes they observe as
balanced chemical equations. The chemical reactions shown in these lessons will also give learners a better
understanding of the chemistry of metals. We will explore the reactions of Group I, II and the transition metals
with oxygen; the reaction of the metal oxides formed and water; and finally the reaction of the alkali metals and
the alkaline earth metals with water.

Cliched Words And Innuendo

In this lesson we show learners why they should guard against using clichés and we illustrate when innuendos
can be used to enhance writing. Many learners who are acquiring English use clichés in their writing and
speaking because they believe this shows their knowledge of the language, or because they lack confidence in
their ability to create unique descriptions. The aim of this lesson is to encourage learners to replace clichés with
original expressions – and this should be encouraged in creative writing. Similarly, encourage learners to look
for opportunities in their creative writing where it would be appropriate to hint at something with an innuendo
rather than describing it in full.
