New CAPS Aligned Teaching Videos

Mindset is proud to introduce the first installment of its CAPS aligned teaching videos for Grade 10 - 12 Maths, Science and Maths Literacy.

These videos are great for use inside the classroom as part of formal teaching either to introduce or revise a concept. But they are also useful for private study and revision.

Each series includes a task video and detailed teaching guides for how these videos can be used in the classroom will be released.

Kaashifa and Anisa on LearnXtra Live - Top Mindsetters on the page

The day after we reached 10 000 we invited top Mindsetters Kaashifa and Anisa into studio. Kaashifa’s mom Kay drove them all the way from Harrismith in the Freestate so the two girls could take part in LearnXtra Live. Both girls are in grade 12 at Harrismith High School and are in the same class for a few subjects and are best friends.

Knowing that even though Marcelle Cross was indeed our 10 000th Mindsetter, we couldn’t forget those who have been loyal to us the entire time. When the girls arrived we gave them Mindset Books that would help them in their Matric year and also give them the tools to help others in study sessions leading up to the end of the year.

Both girls have been active on the page since early this year, Kaashifa more than Anisa. Kaashifa is always on the page and even watched 319 in the afternoons with her Mother Kay and brother Mohammed in the afternoons.

Kaashifa has formed an online study group and is always helping out on the LearnXtra Facebook page. She has made good friends on the page whom she encourages and inspires, namely Noxypedia and Anele, two other girls who are also active on the page, they help each other out even though they have never even met one another in real life.

Kaashifa explains how she has made friends on the LearnXtra Facebook page and how this platform helps her and it helps other learners. She also explained that by helping other learners on the page she was learning at the same time, deepening her understanding of topics at hand just by discussing them on an online platform.

Why should schools encourage all this sharing and meeting?

Schools should reflect the world we live in today. And we live in a social world. We need to teach students how to be effective collaborators in that world, how to interact with people around them, how to be engaged and informed twenty-first-century citizens. We need to teach kids the powerful ways networking can change the way they look at education, not just their social lives. We don't talk enough about the incredible power of social-networking technology for academic benefit. Let's change the terms. Let's not call it social networking, let's call it academic networking.

Team Mindset gets bigger: Meet the Mindsetter part 2 rolls into action.

Mindset Learn Xtra reaches 10,000 Facebook fans

We reached 10 000 fans during LearnXtra Live – Life Science on Wednesday the 9^th during the grade 11 show. On the Tuesday the 8^th we had 400 Mindsetters to go, Mindsetters on the page teamed up and started telling everyone they knew to like the page and even got their school involved, rallying up the troops to push our little online community to 10 000.

Mindset were watching the likes and as we hit 10 000, we identified Marcelle Cross as the 10 000^th person to like the page. Marcelle is the lucky winner of R2000 worth of Mindset educational resources and he will be coming to studio to receive his prize and meet the team on Tuesday the 22^nd of May during the Physical Science show.

We asked Marcelle, who is an Aviation enthusiast, a few questions and this is what he had to say:

"I am in Grade 11 at Hoërskool Dinamika and I am currently a top ten student. I also participate in my school's English play, athletics, cross-country and cricket. My favourite subjects are Geography and Physical Science. I love Mathematics and Life Sciences as well. I watch Mindset LearnXtra on Mondays, Tuesday and Wednesdays."

CoZa Cares and Mindset launch Grade 12 IT resources

Mindset Learn’s new Grade 12 Information Technology learning materials were launched on Wednesday 22 February.

The materials were sponsored by Uniforum SA, through its CSI arm Coza Cares. The IT materials consist of 50 units of learning, amounting to over 25 hours of video and interactive, computer-based lessons, with printed summaries, notes and worksheets. Each school that offers IT as a matric subject will receive a set of the materials for use in the IT classroom.

At the official launch of the Grade 12 IT learning materials, Fiona Wallace, Manager of Coza Cares, reiterated Coza Cares’ ongoing commitment to promoting the development of IT skills in schools, stressing that working in parternships is the most effective way to achieve significant results.

Mr Phil Mnisi, Head of Curriculum and Innovation in the National Department of Basic Education expressed concern about the recent decline in learner numbers in both Information Technology and Computer Applications Technology, as well as the worryingly low average pass mark amongst IT learners.

These trends, along with the decline in learner numbers in Mathematics, do not bode well for the needs of the South African economy. He expressed his hope that IT teachers, already in short supply, would remain dedicated to teaching these invaluable IT skills and that they would benefit from the new Mindset Learn multidimensional resources with which to teach IT in their classrooms.
