Learners are introduced to the content of the next three lessons in this series before embarking on this lesson
which involves instruments. Firstly, the concept of noise is explored in everyday examples and compared to the
vibrations of music. Secondly, the two scientific principles that musical instruments must comply with to create
music are discussed. These principles are resonance and standing waves. The frequency of standing waves is
called harmonics in musical terms and the mathematical relationship between this frequency and wavelength is
explored. These difficult concepts are carefully explained in the lesson with the use of diagrams and are applied
to musical instruments and how they work.
