In this lesson we differentiate between different types of diction and discuss when it is suitable to use each type
of register. After you have shown this lesson, encourage learners to think of examples, such as the “bomb” example used in the lesson, where one word can have a range of meanings depending on the situation that it is used in and the formality of the register. The concepts used in this lesson could also be reinforced and applied to speaking and listening by encouraging learners to act out a role play. Then ask them when it would and wouldn’t be
appropriate to use the language that was included in the role play.
