Shifting The Quadratic Function

To introduce this lesson, let learners work with a diagram of the parent function on the Cartesian plane and the traced graph again. They should mark the position of the origin with a small cross on the tracing paper. As with the linear graph, the value of q describes the position of the parabola on the y-axis. For the subset of quadratic functions we study, the turning point is always on the y-axis. You may want to show learners that the parabola can move to positions off the y-axis, but that they will study these transformations in Grade 11.
