In this lesson we discuss how the words that poets choose have literal and symbolic meanings. We then
consider some examples and discuss the surface and deep meanings of these and the symbolism that has
been used. After learners have watched this lesson, you could find suitable examples of diction in their set poetry for them to analyse. They should be able to use the same style that the presenter has used for commenting on the
choice of words and the meanings that these have.
