This lesson deals with the electrolytic cell, which uses electricity to produce a chemical reaction. The decomposition of electrolyte by an electric current is called electrolysis. An electrolyte is a molten or aqueous substance which will conduct an electric current. The reactions in an electrolytic cell can be expressed in terms of cathode and anode reactions or half reactions. Anions are negative ions and cations are positive ions.
