Underprivileged schools received free digital libraries

Selected underprivileged high schools in North West and Free State provinces received free digital libraries from the non-profit making organisation, Mindset Network. The project, through which digital libraries of educational content are donated to schools, is part of Mindset Network's celebration of the legacy of former President Nelson Mandela.

Under-resourced schools received computer labs

UniForum SA, in partnership with NetDay Association and Mindset Learn, handed over computer laboratories to five Potchefstroom schools towards the end of 2009. The North West Department of Education accepted the project at Botoka Secondary School, Ikageng.

In August 2009, Mindset staff members participated in a diversity workshop organised by management. The CEO, Bobby Soobrayan stated that the workshop was a result of the previous year's staff survey (2008) which encouraged staff to anonymously express their views and feelings about the organisation at large and recommend remedies where needed.

In June 2009, Mindset Health Professional Development Manager, Ms Eunice Seekoe presented her Doctoral study on mentoring Newly Appointed Nurse Educators (NANE) in Nursing Education Institutions (NEI's) in South Africa. The study was presented at a recent Biennial conference (meeting) organised by the International Network for Doctoral Education in Nursing (INDEN) in Durban. The conference theme broadly asked the health professional development sector if "it is meeting the global leadership challenge".

Mindset Staff gives back to their communities

In celebration of the legacy of the former President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr. Nelson Mandela, Mindset Network is joining in the global movement by donating sets of Mindset Learn educational libraries on data format, to 67 underprivileged schools and community centers. This educational resource consists of over 240 hours of curriculum aligned video content and 96 interactive multimedia lessons with accompanying softcopy worksheets for Grades 10 to 12 in Mathematics, Sciences, English, Mathematical Literacy and IT.

According to the organisers, Education Week provided a forum for everyone involved in education, from government to private companies, FET colleges, universities, publishers, e-learning organisations and many more. Delegates had the opportunity to learn from, share and be inspired by their peers. The Nelson Mandela Foundation in association with 46664 is launching Mandela Day on July, 18, 2009, Nelson Mandela's birthday.
This is a day to honour Mr Mandela's leadership and humanitarian legacy by taking some time to do good. Each person who responds to this call must decide what they plan to do as a tribute to Mr Mandela.

Pursuant to the successful development and deployment of the Grade 10 Information Technology (IT) digital content in video, print and computer based multimedia, Uniforum and Mindset Network have partnered again to create content for Grade 11 IT.

One of the key challenges facing the South African education system is amongst others, rapid development and convergence in functionality of information, communications, and broadcasting technologies as well as growing pressure on traditional education to provide access to far larger numbers of learners.

The P.E.A.C.E. Foundation-Toyota Project utilizes Mindset content for community development

Mindset Network was represented at the launch of the Ga-Matlala School Project on the 12th of March 2009. Mrs Nora Tager and other staff members from the P.E.A.C.E. Foundation launched this project in only three months. Funding was provided by Toyota Tsusho Africa, a subsidiary of the Toyota Corporation and member of the Toyota Group. The Toyota Tsusho Africa MD, Mr Edji Tani, attended the ceremony. In addition, Mr Steinberg, an Israeli ambassador and potential funder, also attended in order to gain insight into the projects run by the P.E.A.C.E. Foundation.

New broadcast schedule for Learn channel

Mindset Learn's broadcast of educational lessons for learners and teachers has been restructured to meet viewers' needs. Now school subjects are lined up according to days instead of multiple subjects in one day. Again, lessons missed during the day are repeated in the evening, followed by Rock Challenge, a recorded live arts performance that concludes each learning day.

Mindset has just completed a video on Child Labour; it was requested by International Child Labour via an organisation called, Towards the Eradication of Child Labour (TECL). The video and interactive multi-media module is aligned to the school subject: Life Orientation.

Mindset participated in the ICTs in schools conference

Mindset Learn was invited to participate in the ICTs in schools conference organised by Gauteng East District in Springs over two days (30th and 31st March 2009). More than 500 teachers a day from about 100 schools in the district attended the conference which also attracted over 20 companies involved in ICTs to exhibit their products.
